At What Age Should a Child Begin Preschool?

The Benefits of Beginning Preschool at An Early Age.

Beginning from birth, a child is like a sponge, absorbing stunning amounts of knowledge from his environment rapidly and effortlessly. Dr. Montessori identified this fertile period of cognitive development, and recognized the need for a rich, well prepared environment just for the young child. Numerous psychological studies, based on controlled research, have confirmed these theories of Dr. Montessori. After analyzing thousands of such studies, Dr. Benjamin S. Bloom of the University of Chicago, wrote in Stability and Change in Human Characteristics, “From conception to age 4, the individual develops 50% of his mature intelligence; from ages 4 to 8 he develops another 30%… this would suggest the very rapid growth of intelligence in the early years and the possible great influence of the early environment on his development.”

“Knowledge can best be given where there is eagerness to learn, so this is the period when the seed of everything can be sown, the child’s mind being like a fertile field, ready to receive what will germinate into knowledge.”

—Maria Montessori

The main objective of Adobe Montessori School is to provide a carefully planned, stimulating environment which will help children develop within themselves the foundational habits, attitudes, skills, and ideas which are essential for a lifetime of creative thinking and learning.  Each classroom is rich with materials and activities which aid the child in their cognitive development, ie… expanding their attention span, their memory, producing and understanding language, develop reasoning skills, problem solving abilities and decision making skills honed.  The materials and games give the child step-by-step lessons that aid them in their progression in all areas of reading, mathematics, geography, language skills, grace & courtesy, appropriate social behaviors, physical abilities & much more.

Our specific goals for the children:
1. To develop a positive attitude toward school and learning.
2. To develop a sense of high self-esteem.
3. To develop habits of concentration for lifelong study skills.
4. To develop and foster an abiding curiosity.
5. To develop habits of initiative and persistence.
6. To foster inner discipline and a sense of order.
7. To develop sensory-motor skills in order to sharpen the ability to discriminate and judge.
8. To develop socially acceptable behavior.
9. To acquire the basic skills necessary for a lifetime of learning.
10. To help develop each child’s innate, ultimate potential through high self- expectations.

Although the entrance age varies in individual schools, a child can usually enter a Montessori classroom between the ages of two and one half and four, depending on when he can be happy and comfortable in a classroom situation. He will begin with the simplest exercise based on activities which all children enjoy. The equipment which he uses at three and four will help him to develop the concentration, coordination and working habits necessary for the more advanced exercises he will perform at five and six. The entire program of learning is purposefully structured.

Adobe Montessori School is a unique cycle of learning designed to take advantage of the child’s sensitive times between 2.6 and 6 years, when he can absorb information from an enriched environment. A child who acquires the basic skills of reading and arithmetic in this natural way has the advantage of beginning his education without drudgery, boredom or discouragement. By pursuing his individual interests in a Montessori classroom, he gains an early enthusiasm for learning, which is the key to his becoming a truly educated person.

Adobe Montessori also offers an “Early Primary” classroom for children ages 2.3 years to 3.6 years old.  The child is evolving from a toddler to early preschooler.   This classroom specializes in assisting the young child with developing  stages of language, spatial, physical/motor skills as well as helping the young child become more confident in their newly acquired bathroom-toilet learning abilities and assisting them in good hygiene habits.

Many parents, over the years, have chosen Adobe Montessori School’s approach to early childhood education for their children and see their children bloom before their very eyes.
